Understanding Melodic Style: A look at the principles that make the melodic technique work with Ira Gitlin

1:00 - 2:30

Melodic banjo playing (sometimes called Keith-style or chromatic banjo), pioneered by Bill Keith and Bobby Thompson in the 1960s, is a powerful extension of bluegrass technique that opens up expansive musical vistas. But it can be confusing to those who are new to it. This single-session workshop, aimed at students who have a basic grasp of Scruggs-style playing, will demystify melodic banjo by exploring the principles behind it. We'll look at how scales are constructed, and use that knowledge to build a couple of useful licks and a fiddle-tune arrangement.

The Bluegrass Voice – How to Develop the Bluegrass “Sound” in Your Singing with Dede Wyland

2:30 - 4:00

Looking to develop a “bluegrassier” vocal sound? This workshop is for you!

The workshop will begin with a review of basic vocal tips and techniques that will help to open up your voice, improve range and enhance tone quality.

Secondly, you will learn how to develop an authentic bluegrass vocal sound without distorting or disguising your natural voice. We will focus on the six elements inherent to the bluegrass sound including: vocal production, phrasing, timing, syncopation, ornamentation and finding the right key. This workshop is open to ages 16+ (students under the age of 16 should speak to us prior to registration).

Free Bluegrass Jam

4:00 - 5:00

Join us for a jam! Dede Wyland and Ira Gitlin lead a free bluegrass jam following their workshops.

Jammers should know at least the basics of their instrument, so they can play along with the group.

The jam is free to attend, but please register (using the link at the bottom of the page) as it ensures you a spot in the jam.

We encourage you to arrive early!
